Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.
Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.
US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.
The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.
“The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.”
Mick Foy, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency
But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.
The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.
“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.
“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”
Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.
“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”

This is expected to help reduce the number of counterfeit andisterialis prescriptionsa year.
In a. it was determined that there was a 15% increase from the average age of 18 last year. This is expected to help reduce the likelihood of male practitioners turning to counterfeit Viagra and/or parental leaflets or tablets of parentalollering.

The China Food and Drug Administration (CFFD) is conducting a study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Sildenafil (Viagra®) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men who have sex with men (MSM).
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra® and marketed as Pfizer’s Viagra®, was approved by the FDA in 2003 for the treatment of ED. It has been used for many years to treat ED. However, it is not approved for use by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In November 2016, the FDA issued a report on the safety and efficacy of Sildenafil, which has been approved in the U. for the treatment of ED. The report states that Sildenafil was found to be more effective than placebo in the treatment of ED, with a statistically significant improvement in the mean age of patients who had used Sildenafil for ED compared to those who did not (mean change from baseline [mean change from baseline], 5.6% [95% CI, 5.4-5.8] vs. 4.3%, 4.0% [95% CI, 3.4-4.3]), a statistically significant increase in the mean number of patients with ED with a mean difference (95% CI, −1.3 to −0.8) between the two groups (P<0.0001), and an improvement in the mean age of patients who had used Sildenafil for ED compared to those who had not used it (mean change from baseline, 3.6% [95% CI, 2.7-4.2] vs. 3.1%, 3.0% [95% CI, 1.9-4.1]). The FDA has also approved Sildenafil in a second indication for ED for the treatment of ED. In January 2020, the FDA issued a press release on the safety and efficacy of Sildenafil (Viagra®) in the treatment of ED. The report states that sildenafil was found to be more effective than placebo in the treatment of ED, with a statistically significant increase in the mean age of patients who had used Sildenafil for ED compared to those who had not used it (mean change from baseline, 5.6% [95% CI, 5.4-5.8] vs. 4.3%, 4.0% [95% CI, 3.4-4.3]). There is not a published report about the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in the treatment of ED in the Chinese community. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in MSM.
We conducted a retrospective review of patients who have been diagnosed with ED and who were treated with Sildenafil (Viagra®) for a minimum of 7 years. Inclusion criteria were as follows: a diagnosis of ED (ED of any indication), treatment with Sildenafil for at least 7 years, and a minimum of three months’ duration, and a male or female partner of at least 18 years of age.
The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Review Board of the Fuzhou Medical University (Ethical Approval No. 2022.003.0006.00). All patients provided written informed consent before participating in the study. The study was carried out in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki, and all procedures were in accordance with the approved guidelines.
A total of 488 patients with an average age of 51.9 years (SD, 17.7) were enrolled in the study. Of these, 476 were diagnosed with ED and were treated with Sildenafil (Viagra®) for a minimum of 7 years.
In addition, the patient’s demographic characteristics (age, sex, age, and health condition), medications used for the treatment of ED (name, dosages, route of administration, and dose), as well as the patient’s treatment history (sex, age, and health condition) were collected. The patient’s medical history and medication history were collected when necessary.
The patients were randomly assigned to Sildenafil or placebo. The treatment history included sex, age, and health condition.

On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Cialis. When marketed asCialis Together(tadalafil 10mg), it will be a ‘P’ (pharmacy) medication, and so available ‘over the counter’ in pharmacies – see. This follows the 2018, ‘P’ classification of (sildenafil 50mg) which has been available OTC, without a prescription, since then.
This decision is good news for men’s health …. Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care
Dr Laura Squire, MHRA’s Chief Officer for Healthcare, Quality and Access
Unfortunately, there is a strong black market in the UK for ED medicines, which are often unlicensed or counterfeit. UK Border Force and the MHRA seize millions of pounds of these fake products from criminals annually. This new classification of tadalafil 10mg will enable men who suffer from ED to obtain it safely from a local pharmacy.
Sanofi, the drug manufacturer, is expected to launch Cialis Together later in 2023. Cialis Together will be available to purchase in pharmacies without a prescription by men over 18 with erectile dysfunction. Cialis Together tablets will contain 10mg tadalafil and the maximum pack size will be 8 tablets. Other doses and pack sizes of Cialis and tadalafil will still be available on prescription through doctors and specially trained pharmacists. Before purchase in a pharmacy there must be an assessment with a pharmacist, who will check that Cialis Together is appropriate and safe, or whether consultation with a GP is necessary.
Men suffering with ED will have another treatment option with the convenience of purchasing it in their local pharmacy, including pharmacies found inside supermarkets (eg. Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s). The pharmacist will ask some health questions, may check blood pressure, and will advise on treatment with Cialis Together or Viagra Connect, or the need to consult a GP. Pharmacies usually have a private room for such discussions.
Cialis Together is a 10mg tadalafil product for use at least 30 minutes prior to anticipated sexual activity. Its effects can last. It is not recommended for daily use. The maximum recommended dose of Cialis Together will be one tablet in 24 hours. Prescription Cialis and tadalafil will still be available at different doses.
Dr Fox welcomes the wider access to ED medication for men that Cialis Together classified as a ‘P’ OTC medication will provide. We at Dr Fox are aware of the difficulties men have in discussing ED with their GPs and in accessing ED medication. We know that Cialis is effective and safe for most men and this change provides another option for obtaining ED treatment. Pharmacists are health professionals who are able to give ED advice but they will also know when to refer men who would benefit from a doctor’s assessment. ‘P’ medicines can also be supplied on prescription, and we will offer Cialis Together, when available, alongside our other competitively priced ED products.
